OASIS this week approved SAML (Security Assertion MArkup Language) as an OASIS Standard. Eve Maler at Sun Microsystems has a quick post about the role and eventual impact, plus a plug for Son ONE Identity Server. SAML allows for interoperable exchange of security information about subjects, focusing on describing three kinds of things: authentication acts, attributes, and authorization decisions. You can request "assertions" in these forms from "SAML authorities" that you trust. One especially useful scenario for SAML is single sign-on (SSO), where a user can log in to one website but then proceed to use resources at a website in a different domain -- because SAML assertions are being exchanged that tell the second site that the user's okay. This was the focus of the selection of SAML as an underpinning of the Liberty Allianceidentity federation work and for Sun's SAML support in its Sun ONE Identity Serverproduct. Another scenario is to use SAML assertions to secure a SOAP ...

Reading Micheal M's comment, I realized that I was not clear enough in my last post. When I said I didn't want to think about security, I meant as a plumber. Part of my responsibility as the designer or developer of an application is, as Micheal M, says, to think about everything as a possible security hole. He is absolutely right and I did not intend to imply otherwise. But I need help. I can't write my own cryptography engine. I don't have the time, and, more importantly, I won't get it right. Similarly, I don't want to have to write my own SSL hand-shake to establish a secure channel with an HTTPS endpoint. Luckly, those things are provided for me by my platform. However, that doesn't mean I get to abdicate all responsibility. At the very least, I have to: Make sure I understand how these technologies work and I know how to use them correctly Decide how to use these technologies to my application so that I ensure data integrity and confidentiality wherever it's required Make ...

If you really are Obsessive-Compulsive, or Compulsive-Obsessive or you just come here a lot, you may want to spend money buying weird stuff that I came up with. The cool part is that I will make no money from it. That's right, I just wanted this stuff myself, so I made it (actually, Cafe Press makes it). However, if you find this stuff odd, amusing or just plain old fun you can buy it. ...

I just finished "reading" an incredible book – Moneyball: The art of winning an unfair game. This book is about the Oakland A's, and how it's general manager, Billy Beane, has made the team successful in a market place (major league baseball) that is supposedly substantially bias to the big market, wealthy teams – of which the Oakland A’s are not. For example, Oakland generates about $50-60 million in revenue a year compared to the $100-300 million generated by the big city teams. This makes it very hard for Oakland to bring in good players via the free agent hiring process and therefore should mean that Oakland should not be a good team every year. However, the opposite has happened – the Oakland A’s have been one of the top teams in baseball for the last several years. Ok, I know what you are thinking, how good can a book about baseball be? Or that you don’t even like baseball, so why would you read a book about it. Bottom line, this book is less about baseball and more about ...

LAST POSTCARD FROM COSTA DEL BLOGTime for me to get back to my day job, which means that it’s time for me to stop blogging. I’ve found blogging to be a low-impact activity, mildly narcotic and mostly quite convivial, but the thing I’ve most enjoyed about it is how it never fails to underline the fact that if I’m doing this I’m definitely not writing a novel – that is, if I’m still blogging, I’m definitely still on vacation. I’ve always known, somehow, that it would get in the way of writing fiction, and that I wouldn’t want to be trying to do both at once. The image that comes most readily to mind is that of a kettle failing to boil because the lid’s been left off.The bits and pieces that Joseph Cornell assembled in his shadow-boxes wouldn’t have seemed nearly as interesting if he’d simply left them arrayed on the bench of some picnic-table –- and they certainly wouldn’t still be there. I crave the sweet and crazy-making difficulties that can only be imposed by the box, the ...

James Maule -- A Firestorm of Response Declan's Politech errupted in a firestorm of response to James Maule's defense of RIAA's actions - almost all of which was more knowledgeable and erudite than my own. Because of the size and substance of response, I wanted to pass along some of the best for anyone who has followed along thus far, first Declan's introduction: Wow. This struck a nerve. Because of the sheer volume, it's been a difficult set of replies to manage. First, I've had about 100 of them, totaling over half a megabyte, and taking me about 40 minutes toedit. [...] Patrick J. Kobly speaks to the societal bargain of intellectual property and how the terms have changed over the years : Copyright and "intellectual property" were created in the United States to promote the arts and sciences by offering a limited time of statutorily provided monopoly protection to the creators of a work. This is the bargain that was made by creators with society. The progress of the arts and ...
